From smartphone to the desktop: Data is no longer tied to one device

Adoption of file-sharing software is ensuring the ongoing productivity of employees as they become increasingly mobile.

Mobile devices and cloud technology allow businesses to be productive in almost any place and at any time. At the same time, small businesses can use these technologies to make their company more flexible than ever before. As more staff connect to work-related apps and view their email via smartphones, file-sharing software becomes increasingly important to a company's productivity. Without data flowing simply and effectively between devices, businesses could stagnate or fall behind the competition.

The old world

It might sound a little crazy to think of emails and USB drives as outdated technology, but the pace of technological change gave rise to software, such as live chat and file-sharing platforms, which can be considered superior to their older cousins. Email and USBs remain the incumbent technology, but as workers become increasingly mobile – moving from the workplace to on-the-go during office hours – the need for more immediacy on devices will increase.

Mobile business trends

As employees demand more work-life balance and the freedom to work independently of their desks, they will need easy access to work files if they are to remain productive. This predicates a need for quick and easy communication between devices so staff can pull up the files they need on any device, such as phones, tablets and laptops. Data is no longer confined to the workplace – rather, it’s something workers need within reach 24 hours a day. USBs can be lost and email can be cumbersome to navigate, which is where file-sharing software steps in.

File-sharing productivity benefits

Every business needs quality file-transfer platforms for two key reasons: to improve the flow of business processes and communication, as well as to increase worker productivity. These two reasons are closely related. For example, if a sales department closes a large technology deal, the sales representative can alert both administration and the IT department to the specifications of the deal through a file-sharing platform, making smooth the transition from acquiring business to executing the project. This example shows how both processes and productivity can be streamlined through the use of file sharing.

File-sharing services, such as Dropbox or SHAREit, allow multiple users to access files on any device. For example, SHAREit lets users sync their PC and phone through a QR code to start transferring files, meaning employees can take work home with them or share projects with each other no matter where they are located.

With file sharing becoming the standard across the business landscape, companies would do well to invest in these platforms to ensure the ongoing productivity of their increasingly mobile workforce.
